Description

Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128 is a very bright elliptical (or possibly lenticular) galaxy that's merging with a spiral galaxy. It's the 5th brightest galaxy in the sky, and is a strong radio source. A 55 million solar mass black hole resides at the core of the galaxy. Wikipedia notes that the x-ray jets of this galaxy are thousands of light years long, and the radio jets are over a million light years long!

One of the most unique galaxies in the sky (IMO), NGC 5128 is an excellent target for astrophotography for those favored with lower latitudes. It's a tough target for us in the northern hemisphere. This object was captured in Arizona at the TAAA CAC dark site over multiple nights in April and May 2021. The maximum elevation angle was 15 degrees.
